Bose Companion 2 Series III Computer Speakers Review

bose companion 20 multimedia speaker system review

Look and Feel

Right out of the box, the Bose C2 speakers look and smell fresh and clean. Unlike the older Bose C2 (series II), these speakers are fully black and have fabric covering each Bose Companion 2 drivers. They are slightly slanted upwards to face the ears of the listener.

All the I/O is on the right speaker, including the left speaker output, AC adapter, and 3.5mm audio jack. On the front of it is also the volume knob (which is not illuminated) and headphone jack.

Both speakers follow the same design – fully black enclosure, Bose logo on the bottom, and fabric grills. This is a major improvement over the previous model, which was fully aluminum.

Along with these changes also came improved sound clarity and a huge boost in bass performance. The grills are not removable.

There is a 1-year manufacturer warranty.

Sound Quality

We know that Bose products are well-known for their top-notch sound quality, and this one is no exception. The Bose Companion 2 bass features each speaker having one large Bose-tuned driver in the front, directing some bass and all mid/high tones to the listener, and a small cabinet for bass reverb out the back.

High tones are extremely crisp and clear, mid tones are quieter but still present, and the bass is not room-shaking, but is close to it and just the perfect amount. At higher volumes, there is no distortion to sound. You may not even want to make it so loud, though, since my ears suffer even only at half volume!

Listening to music with these is a blast. I can hear many small audio cues which were not present with my previous speakers, and they’re tuned so fine that everything sounds perfect with them. Higher volumes make audio even better to listen to.

Games, too, worked very well. I trusted these enough that I played a CS:GO tournament without headphones, and I was able to play Amnesia: The Dark Descent and survive! Movies, too, sounded very nice. These speakers make every bit of a film as dramatic as it needs to be, and everything sounds very cinematic.

Pros, Cons, and Conclusion

PROS:
  • Stellar sound quality.
  • Classy design.
  • Perfect size to fit nearly any setup.
CONS:
  • No illumination for audio knob to indicate on/off.
  • Power and audio cables should be longer.

CONCLUSION:

Final score: 9.7/10

The Bose Companion 2 speakers boast great sound and a nice design, and do not fall short in any category. Only having small nuisances (as stated in the cons list above), these are just perfect for anyone looking for a cheaper solution to quality-hungry multimedia lovers.
